The Body As Haunted is my debut poetry collection published in partnership with Authortunities Press run by the phenomenal poet and multiple Stoker Award winning EIC of Space & Time Magazine, Angela Yuriko Smith. Her first novel, Inujini, is a magical realist gut-wrenching story about the Occupation of Okinawa by the Japanese, then the Americans, and the terrors of war and the suffering of the Shimanchu people.
My book is a full length poetry collection on the theme of how our bodies are and can be and are haunted- by our history, our family ghosts, by society, the body politic, by our emotions, by cancer/illness, by and in our very selves and identities. We are ghosts in meat cages and we carry so very many ghosts with us. We’re always haunted. It is a dark speculative poetry book that doesn’t play nice, but there are a few lovely tender ghosts in it as well. I selected pieces from over 30+ years ago to ones written weeks before publication and are exclusively for this book.
I do not do trigger warnings in my books. I trust my readers - to close a book and to self-regulate their emotions. Instead, I open with a transcript of a spoken word piece called “Trigger Warnings”- while no I don’t cover every possible trigger anyone could have in this collection, this book is definitely a challenging read but I strongly feel people need to be challenged to develop resilience and to develop healthy coping and self-regulation in their emotional toolkits. You will not find affirmations and aphorisms disguised with enjambment and cute little line drawings in this book.
Instead, you will find just me. My heart, my soul, my essence, and you will meet all my ghosts, both good and bad, and I’ll be right there with you the whole time.
🖤,
Pixie
